84% of Dealer Websites Are Invisible to AI
When customers ask ChatGPT for dealer recommendations, most dealerships don't exist. Here's the data.
The Two-Part Problem
AI compatibility isn't just about blocking. It's about whether AI can understand your business once it gets in.
Part 1: Access
Is your site blocking AI crawlers?
Nearly half of dealer websites are actively telling ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude to go away, through robots.txt rules, CloudFlare settings, or HTTP-level blocks.
Part 2: Optimization
Can AI understand your business?
Even sites that allow AI access often lack the structured data (Schema.org, JSON-LD) that helps AI understand your inventory, location, hours, and services.
The Analogy: Blocking AI is like locking the door. Missing schema is like leaving the door open but having no signs, no price tags, no organization inside. A customer walks in and has no idea what you sell.
What We Found
We analyzed 100 dealer websites across multiple OEMs, regions, and website providers.
Grade Distribution
No sites achieved an A or C grade. The industry is polarized: either passing or failing badly.
Why Sites Are Failing
The problems fall into two categories: blocking issues and optimization gaps.
Blocking Issues
Preventing AI Access
Optimization Gaps
AI Can't Understand
It's Not the Dealer. It's the Provider
The same OEM in different regions can score 82 or 2. The difference? Who built the website.
Toyota Example
We tested 16 Toyota dealers. Scores ranged from 2 to 82.
The high scorers allowed AI access and had proper schema. The low scorers used aggressive CloudFlare blocking or had zero structured data.
Same brand. Wildly different AI visibility. The variable? Website platform.
The Pattern
Sites from the same provider cluster together in scoring. If one dealer on a platform scores low, others typically do too.
This isn't a dealer problem. It's a vendor problem.
"Dealers are paying for websites that make them invisible to the future of search. Most don't even know it."

Methodology
On January 8, 2026, Savvy Dealer analyzed 100 dealership websites using our AI Compatibility Scanner.
Sites were selected to represent a cross-section of:
- • Multiple OEMs (Toyota, Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Kia, Subaru, and more)
- • Various website providers and platforms
- • Different regions across the United States
- • Both franchise and independent dealers
Each site was tested for AI crawler access (robots.txt, HTTP responses, WAF blocking) and structured data presence (Schema.org markup, JSON-LD implementation, schema completeness).
Scores are calculated on a 100-point scale with 80+ considered passing.
